What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) refers to a group of complex brain development disorders and is characterized by difficulties with social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, and emotional control.

Autism is a spectrum disorder, meaning it affects each child differently. Every child has a unique set of characteristics, and each child's ability to communicate, process, socialize, and manage behaviors requires an individualized child-centered treatment plan.

  • Impaired Social Communication Skills

Impaired social communication skills may be an indication of an autism diagnosis. Children with autism often struggle with the following social skills:

    • Responding to their name (appearing deaf)
    • Sharing interests
    • Making and maintaining eye contact
    • Expressing warm or joyful emotions
    • Searching for objects that are hidden
    • Pointing to items of interest
    • Interacting with peers and/or family (may desire to be alone)

  • Impaired Communication Skills

A child diagnosed with autism often displays impaired communication skills, which may include missing the following milestones:

    • Babbling or cooing by 12 months
    • Using gestures or any words by 12 months
    • Speaking single words by 16 months
    • Utilizing two-word phrases by 24 months
    • Displaying typical speech patterns, such as rhythm, pitch, and volume

  • Repetitive or Restricted Behavior

Children with autism may exhibit repetitive or restricted behaviors, such as:

    • Focusing on objects or parts of objects (ex. Spinning wheels of a car, fan spinning, etc.)
    • Making repetitive body movements, such as hand flapping, spinning, rocking, slapping
    • Resisting changes in routine

  • Other Behaviors and Concerns

In addition to the behaviors listed above, children diagnosed with ASD may experience:

    • Sensory issues, including being over- or under-sensitive to lights, smells, touch, tastes, noises, or pressure
    • Extreme meltdowns or tantrums
    • Sleeping difficulties

Could My Child Have Autism?

Approximately 1 in 36 children in the United States will be diagnosed with autism each year. If your child exhibits any of the behaviors listed above, it is possible that he or she may be diagnosed on the autism spectrum.

Diagnosing children with Autism Spectrum Disorder can be challenging and complex. The most important thing you can do is consult a professional if you think your child is displaying atypical behavior.
