What is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based science in which behavior modifications are systematically applied to improve socially significant behavior to a meaningful degree.
During ABA therapy, skills are broken down into small, easy-to-learn steps. Positive reinforcement is used to motivate the child, and data is continuously collected to measure the child’s progress and modify their personalized treatment plan. ABA is the single most effective treatment for children with ASD and the only treatment shown to lead to substantial, lasting improvements in the lives of children with autism. Over 1,000 peer-reviewed, scientific autism articles describe ABA successes, leading to the National Institute of Health and the Association for Science in Autism Treatment to endorse the method along with the U.S. Surgeon General.
Our clients saw a 96% overall aggregate skills improvement across all categories tested after 6 months of intervention.

How much therapy will my child need?
An overwhelming number of studies have shown that ABA is effective in teaching new skills and reducing problem behavior. However, how much ABA is needed to influence behavior to a significant and measurable degree? There is no definite answer to that question, as all autism cases are unique. However, research clearly supports early and intensive intervention.
In 2001, the National Research Council Report recommended a minimum of 25 hours per week. In 2007, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended 20 hours or more of active engagement in evidence-based interventions. These are the minimum number of hours based on research for young children.
84% of our clients showed a significant improvement across all tested areas after 6 months of intervention.
Can ABA be used with other interventions?
Centria supports a multidisciplinary approach, but many studies show that the use of ABA should serve as the primary component of any treatment program. In some studies, researchers compared intensive ABA with less intensive ABA and/or other early intervention or special education programs for children with autism. Generally, they found that children who receive intensive ABA treatment make larger improvements in more skill areas than children who participate in other interventions. In addition, the parents of the children who receive intensive ABA report greater reductions in daily stress than do parents whose children receive other treatments.

Home-based vs. Center-based ABA programs
When comparing home-based and center-based ABA programs, it is important to understand that the decision will depend on which is the best fit for your unique situation and your child. Regardless of which environment you select, have confidence in your decision as you’ve already taken a critical step in the process by choosing ABA intervention for your child. The next challenge is often maintaining the commitment to consistently attending therapy and achieving the medically recommended number of program hours. Keeping this commitment often comes down to your schedule, available transportation, and other circumstances that can influence your family’s daily routine.
It is important to remember that ABA techniques work across all environments, the most common being home-based and center-based programs. In making a decision, most families look for the most effective approach based upon the needs of their child, and the demands of their lifestyle. The decision usually comes down to your personal preference and your child’s unique autism symptoms.
The advantages of a home-based program
Home-based programs offer some obvious advantages. First, as the location is in the family's home, there is no travel on the part of the family. Additionally, when therapy is performed in the home, it is much easier for parents to see and hear the child and therapist interacting, leading to natural teaching opportunities. Performing therapy services in the home also offers a known and comfortable environment. One final argument for in-home services is the idea that ABA intervention doesn’t just happen during formal sessions, but should be included in the child’s everyday life, aiding in generalization. This philosophy is much easier to adopt when the services are provided in-home.
The advantages of a center-based program
When considering a center-based program, some believe what could be viewed as weaknesses are actually strengths. While some believe a busy center can provide unwanted distraction, other experts in the field believe the opportunity to socialize is a positive. Center-based therapy provides more opportunities to control the environment and facilitate more direct oversight than home-based therapy and can be a great choice if there are noisy siblings at home. The bottom line is that if your child is ready and not easily distracted by the more social environment, a center-based program may work for you.
Still not sure? Centria provides both in-home and center-based therapies and can design a hybrid program for you combining the two. Our approach has always been to offer programs in both environments, and allow you to choose the approach that is best for your child and family.
